Cock Beck River Monitoring – Volunteers Required
The parish council has been asked by the Yorkshire Dales River Trust to reach out to local people to ask for volunteers to collect data to help understand the health of Cock Beck by using river invertebrates as an indicator.
The note from the Yorkshire River Dales Trust reads:
“A training session is being held on the 30th September at Barwick Village Hall from 10am-4pm. Local volunteers will be trained in how to identify key riverfly invertebrates and will understand the importance around monitoring them. This is a perfect opportunity for anyone that is interested in Cock Beck, science, and the local environment. The training is free, equipment will be provided with the understanding that monthly sampling on Cock Beck will be carried out for a period of a year and equipment must be returned to the trust upon completion. Please note that volunteers must be able to get in and out of Cock Beck, sites will be selected based on ease of access but it is important to mention that it is a requirement to be accessing the beck.”
Once at the river, samples take approx 30 minutes and are taken once a month. This work is part of a larger project that the Yorkshire Dales Rivers Trust are delivering called Rivers In Elmet.
If you’d like more information or would like to become a volunteer for the project, please contact Marie Taylor by email on marie.taylor@ydrt.co.uk or by phone on 07786 875 207. Please note there are only 10 volunteer spaces available.
