Fare Deal for Young People – Seeking Feedback re Bus Fares – Ends 31.05.20
West Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA) are running their “Fare Deal for Young People” engagement from 23 April 20 to 31 May 20, to seek feedback on their plans to improve the system for bus fares for young people.
This is the what WYCA have said about the engagement:
“We plan to introduce these changes from September 2020, at the start of the next academic year.
Young people have told us that access to transport is an important issue to them, and can be a barrier to getting to education, work and leisure opportunities.
The cost of travel and the wide range of different ticket options means that some young people don’t always feel confident they are getting the best deal or value for money and have said that ticket prices should be straightforward and easy to understand.
During 2020, we will be relaxing the rules on ID so that young people will only need to show identification to prove their age if they look older than 19 to enjoy travel discounts. We are also proposing a new simpler system for bus fares which means that under 19s will be guaranteed to pay:
- A maximum single fare for a short bus journey e.g. 60p for around a mile or three stops
- A maximum single fare of £1.20 for longer bus journeys
How can people have their say?
We are asking for feedback from young people (under 19s) and parents of young people in West Yorkshire.
Given the current restrictions in place due to Covid-19, engagement will be purely online via the Your Voice engagement hub. We are working with local youth services, youth councils, schools and colleges to raise awareness of the engagement. We will also actively promote the engagement via social media channels.”
